Argument Collage Artist Statement

For my first image, my first article was about how Bush was waging war on terror with everyone supporting the war. When I was looking for pictures for this article, it wasn't that hard because there were a lot of pictures that were sort of like comics that made fun of the terrorists so there were a bunch of pictures that I could choose from. But I felt that the picture with the words "don't be a filthy terrorist support the war against terror" were strong words that really got the idea out with the picture that I had with Bush and other supporters clapping that he signed the Military Commissions Act bill. Mostly for this first collage, I only used 2 pictures and for the first picture, I only used the words and the Bush and supporters pictures was already there for me to use the lasso tool to crop them out. All I wanted for this picture was to make it simple so that the audience can interpret the picture easily and the importance of the image can be easily seen. For the mood of the collage, I felt like I needed to be like one of the supporters in the back of Bush and see what one of them would say. I thought that one of them would say something that is bad against the terrorists so I decided to use the saying of the filthy terrorists so make it seem funny and make it seem very important at the same time. I decided to put the picture of everyone on the bottom because on the podium that Bush was signing the bill, there is a sign that said "protecting America" and I wanted to include that into the picture without making it seemed like I just placed the picture on there and the words were put on the top so that it was eye catchy to the audience.
For the second picture, the article was about how Habeas Corpus was rejected because of the Military Commissions Act. It was really easy for me to interpret what the article was trying to get out to the readers because all it was saying was how the MCA took away the right of Habeas Corpus. So when I was thinking about what I could do about this picture, I was thinking of how I could make the idea of Habeas Corpus being gone and rejected over the years as the MCA came into use. I decided to show the audience through the idea of "time" with the background of the application "time machine" on a mac because it displays the same ideas that I really wanted to interpret. In photoshop, I used a lot of the technique that Ted taught us with the layer masking by taking some parts of the picture that I didn't want so all 3 of the pictures could be squished in the middle making it seem like its being sucked into the middle of the time machine. I also used the blur tool to refine the edges of the pictures. For the words on the top, I curved it so that i could make it integrated into the idea of the time machine. For the mood of the collage, I wanted to make it seem like there was no chance in having the Habeas corpus right back as a right for people and to me, I think that once something is sucked in to a type of black hole, it never comes back.
For the third collage, I just really wanted to make it seem patriotic because in this article, it stated that the MCA helps America win the war on terror because of the things that the MCA allows the U.S to do like question people who Bush thinks is against America. In the beginning, I made the collage with mostly no layer masking at all and I really didn't know what I could do with this picture because it was so hard to use techniques to make the pictures seem like it wasn't just placed on there. So I asked Ted what I could do with the pictures and he helped me out with the layer masking by making the American flag in the background less visible by adding a layer of gray but when I added that color, the soldiers were not as visble anymore so I had to do the inverse of the layer mask so that I could change the opacity of the gray. I decided to place Bush there on the corner signing the bill because the article mostly mentioned Bush signing the bill and with the soldiers and military vehicles, it showed that the MCA helps America in the war with the soldiers getting to help America with questioning people who seemed to be enemies of the U.S.A. The mood of this collage was somewhat positive because of the soldiers of the U.S. helping to protect the citizens by winning the war on terror and to also keep terrorists from planning more attacks on the U.S.
